Heston Elected To Gun Lobby Board
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, May 6) -- Can Charlton Heston part the waters for the National Rifle Association? The 72-year-old actor, who played Moses in "The Ten Commandments," was elected on Monday to the leading gun lobby's board and named its first vice president. Heston said he's more excited about this post than previous stints at the head of the Screen Actors Guild or on a presidential task force. "I never before had the chance to serve usefully on an organization that defended the Bill of Rights," he said. (288K wav sound) Heston defeated an incumbent board member, gun-issues writer Neal Knox. The vote follows months of internal turmoil at the NRA over its direction. The lobby's top administrator, Wayne R. LaPierre, Jr., recruited Heston, and cast the elections as a choice between centrism or extremism. LaPierre pledged cooperation with his new colleague. "Believe me," LaPierre quipped, "any time Moses wants to make a statement, you let him." |
